RE: Question for RV'ers

This is our second year in our new pop up trailer, we have stayed at numerous campsites all over CA. and have noticed that alot of people who own the bigger RVs and travel trailers, will come in set up there rig and you never see them for the rest of there stay. I understand that they have all the comforts of home inside but why bother even going to a campground, why dont you just stay at home and park in the street. When we bought our PUP I told the wife that in no way is this going to take away from our outdoor camping experiance. To each his own but it seems funny to me why go through all that trouble just to sit inside all day. We have been to some beutiful places, and I couldn't imagine not being able to enjoy the great outdoors.
For us it depends.
This week my RV is replacing a hotel room so the amount of time outside is lower. The week before we were sightseeing so again not a lot of time in the campsite more time out and about the week before that we were camping and spent most of the time in the camp site.
It all depends on why we're at a campground.

RE: Campground Electricity

I guess I'll be the first to take the contrary position. We've been full time for 2 1/2 years now, been in 174 campgrounds, in about 40 states so far, including 6 in Mexico, and have never had a problem. I bought a portable unit for the Mexico trip, used it once and it's stored away.
I think this a myth about campground electricity problems and is a carryover from years past, and hasn't been valid in a long time. I've met people who say the device saved them, but have never met one person (and most RV's don't have them) who complains that their electronics got fried. If nobodies been burnt, then nobodies been saved.
Save your money.
Campground we stayed out about 10 days ago have major electrical issues. Including a warning at the camp ground entrance not to start your AC as their electric couldn't handle them. We had around 108 volts most of the time we were there. Running the coffee maker and the microwave at the same time caused the EMS to trip out the circut because of low voltage.
So yeah you've been lucky.

RE: Campground Electricity

I would like any feedback good or bad about portable 50 AMP surge protectors...I had seen them at CW...I have seen 2 of them...one around the $100.00 and something range and one around the $300.00 and upwards range...the type you plug into the campground electric box...Thanks
We have the Progresive 50 amp and so far it has saved us from a heap of low voltage situations. And considering that the AC can be damaged by low voltage I'm very very happy with the unit well worth the money you pay for it.

RE: Where are all the HitchHiker dealers?

I recently traded from an Alpenlite to a HitchHiker DA because several people that I have met over the years have given the rigs such high praise. However, when I got ready to start researching I discovered that in the Dallas / Ft. Worth area that one of the dealers had closed and that HitchHiker was consolidating their dealers. The only place I could find one was in Decatur, TX just outside the metroplex. They said they were the only HitchHiker dealer in the Ft. Worth area. They were the only ones I could find near to where I lived. The dealer was great to my wife and I. They even let us stay on their property a couple of days on one of their pad sites to see if there was any bugs in the rig. That was a first for me. They are a pretty top notch group. Has anyone else had to search for HitchHiker dealers in your area?
We have a dealer close but don't do business with them. In fact we bought ours from AK Recreation down near Fort Worth Texas before they closed due to health issues.
I've had a couple of things taken care of on our unit and never by a dealer always with an RV service place. Has worked out fine for us.

RE: Glacier Bay

Looking for input, opinions, experiences, feedback, etc on Glacier Bay (North American Traveler) 5th wheels. Please be candid.
We were going to buy a Glacier Bay but got a deal on a Hitchhiker I couldn't turn down.
The factory tour was well worth it for what you get the bang for the buck was very good.
The pluses for us;
Compared well with true four season coaches we were looking at as far as how it was built and insulated.
Price was on the lower side for a four season coach.
Less then 12 feet high with the low profile AC now a standard on their rigs.
The minuses for us;
Would of had to compromise on floorplan
Would of had to get a longer rig than we wanted to get a floorplan that would do the trick.
When the Hitchhiker with the right floor plan and a comparable price came to my attention we went that route but I would of been happy with the Glacier Bay.
As for their being new yes they're going into their 3rd year. New old doesn't seem to matter in the current economy who wold of predicted six months ago that Weekend Warrior and Alpenlite would both be gone?

RE: Forest River Americana Vs NuWa Discover America

We are down to these 2 models. The NuWa owners website comments are very postive about the quality and workmanship of the NuWa product. I have not been able to locate any Americana owners or owners website for the Americana. Any input from this forum would be a great help. Thanks
You don't mention how you plan to use the rig and that to me is the key point. At some point the more expensive Nu Wa makes a lot of sense.
I'd go with the DA but then I like the Nu Wa products. That said it does down to how often you plan to use the unit. We have been out a fair bit and have several more trips planned. The Nu Wa is the right unit for us.
At what number of nights use do you say I want the Nu Wa vs Americana? Only you can answer that.

RE: Puppy lullaby

That video is just awww! Especially when they start to stir and he goes back and croons to them a bit more. I just hope if those pups are to be adopted that they let the new owners know you have to sing them to sleep! I'd hate to be wondering why my new pup wouldn't settle!

RE: Wives!! Let your husbands accept Help ;)

While camping in a provincial park last week, a large party pulled in beside us. Grandma, Grandpa four adult children and a couple grand kids under 3. Very hot out. Mini van and truck and 26ft 5er. Grampa(50ish) driving truck and could not have ever backed a trailer up before because he did not know which way to turn the wheels. One hour of trying to back into a huge double site voices are getting really loud, door is slamming everyone in the party is telling him how it is to be done, and none of them I don't believe had even seen a trailer before. My DW kept telling me to go over and help, but there was a real haustile feeling coming from this lady and I didn't want any of it. An older gent walked by and asked driver if he could give him a hand and the drive say yes, with a few other words around it. First off he told him to take a breath, now you have to turn your wheels the other way then you have to turn sharper, you wont break anything and low and behold the trailer started creepig around into the site then the wife started yelling I don't want this f**en trailer here your wheels are the wrong way, move here move there. Kind gent said nothing more and walked away. 1hr 45 mins later 1 picnic table hit the poor driver finally good said enough and left it where it sat. And yes it stayed hitched to the truck their entire stay. I just thought I would share this poor mans pain with you all.
Thank god I married the woman I did.
Marriage is either the best thing to happen to a man or the worst.
Got to go hug the wife.
Mallo
PS to be on topic a bit my wife directs and I drive I don't even look at the site until she asks me to hop out of the truck and "see what you think" about where she's directed it too.

RE: Discover America dream

Hitch hikers are nice units. I would like to ask how owners deal with everything outside, such as the dump valve, fresh water fill and etc.. Anyone could access those without your knowledge. Is it hard to winterize due to everything scattered here and there? Just wanting to know..
At least on our HH II the dump valves are locked away (not true on all models) ditto the fresh water fill is behind a locked door.
The issue for most RVs with locks for this sort of thing is how unique is the lock? You may think everything is locked up but if the builder used one standard lock that everyone has then the key is worthless.
As for winterizing I had to winterize after the PDI took 5 minutes with the help of the company selling it and after using it once had to winterize again took 10 minutes on my own. Very easy to do. Yes there is a fair amount of moving around but it isn't as if these units are 70 feet long and 20 feet wide. It's a camper fairly small.

RE: Short notice

Who here would consider two days to be short notice to go camping nearby?
Tried to talk husband into going up the canyon we like to camp at and go camping this weekend, but he told me it was short notice. Huh! :?
All we need to do is add water to tt, food, and clothes and go. How hard is that? It is to hot to stay home.
Pack up on the day you want to head out let the old man know there is lunch meat in the fridge and head out. Two days is more then enough notice.

RE: Discover America dream

We are still shopping for our new home - full timing in Sept 09. We have been looking at a Discover America 363RSB. We spent over an hour just checking it all out a couple of weeks ago and are going back tomorrow for another look. Does anyone have any suggestions on model specific things to ask about? Any problems? This one has the BigFoot system installed also, the biggest frig and lots of extra's we fell in love with.
We have learned more reading this forum than I could have imagined!
Thank you all for your help in the biggest adventure of our lives!
Another source of information about the unit your looking at is the Nu Wa company site they have a lot of video's up that will give you some idea's of things to one look for but as well for us the video gave us a number of questions to ask.
http://www.nuwa.com/
That and the owners forum are both good sources.
The one thing I'd want to look at with the DA 363 rsb would be weight.
This is a five slide unit and long for a Nu Wa product. Giving a base weight of 13100 and a GVWR of 16300. The advertised hitch weight is 2760 so your looking at a big truck to tow that. You don't mention what sort of truck you own or are thinking of owning but that would be the biggest thing I'd want to look at with this unit.

RE: Just bought camper. Are we crazy?

Maybe we're not too bright, with the price of gas and all, but my husband and I just bought a 2009 Travel Trailer. Are we nuts? We last owned a camper 4 years ago and always knew we would get another one. But, what a time to buy one! Has the price of fuel stopped anyone from camping ? Our motto is "You only live once" so why not enjoy it.
Yes your crazy now go have fun with us other crazy people.

RE: Considering a Crossroads Kingston (5th wheel)

Do you know of any other manufactures in the Shipsawana IN. area? Being a first time buyer how would I handle warranty work and such being so far from that dealership?
Thanks again!
We bought in Texas and live in PA. So far no issues with warranty work the companies will help you find someone.
That said there are a lot of other builders near Shipsawana KZ is there, Carriage is there (more high end then your thinking) Jayco is near by in Middlebury, as is Sunnybrook who has a unit in your price point.
Last year my wife and I spent a week near Shipsawana touring RV plants, Glacier Bay had a great tour, as did Crossroads, we were unimpressed by some others go have fun make a week of it.

RE: Forum rules regarding sales of RVs.......

I have added the Escapees Forums to the list.
As for the deleted posts, I will delete those that flame and any that refer back to that deleted post. Keep it civil or it is gone!
Frank
Sure sure but what defines civil? What I think is civil may not be what you think is civil. It is after all a judgement call. Maybe your culture sees something my culture sees as a postive in a negitive light.
When I lived in Salt Lake City that area was up in arms. Seems someone had a daughter who had out grown her pony so they put it up for sale. They got a phone call asked all the right questions including what is the pony for? The answer they got was "My sons 13th birthday."
The problem came up on the day that the family from a culture that eats horse came up to pick up the prime portion of a young mans coming of age feast. Only to horrify the family from a culture that doesn't eat horse by humanely killing the horse and bleeding it in the field next to their house.
What you see as flames I see as discussion.

RE: Considering a Crossroads Kingston (5th wheel)

Hi All,
I'm a brand new member and this is my first post. I am considering purchasing a Crossroads Kingston, but have a few questions. This will be our first camper of any type, although we grew up camping. Any help/guidance would be appreciated.
1. Opinions on Crossroads/Kingston
2. How do I know what to pay for a unit, is there a % of MSRP that should be offered?
3. Has anyone toured a Mfg. facility, is a tour worth a 4 hour drive?
4. Hitches...any recommendations? I would like one that will provide the most comfortable ride possible.
I currently own a 2007 GMC Sierra Classic, 2500HD with Duramax Diesel and Allison Transmission, so I hope I'm all set there.
Thanks for any information! Tom
1. I like the Kingston, the wife wanted something a bit more ... so we bought something else.
2. Wana RV had the best price on a Kingston and the folks at the factory tour mentioned he had some of the best prices on their products around. They're in Shipsawana IN.
3. The factory tours are well worth it. Go up spend a few days see more then one factory. If the Kingston is of interested to you check out Crossroads and a couple of other brands. Do the other brands first so you have something to compare when you get to Crossroads.
The truck should be fine and I have no opinion on number 4.

RE: Forum rules regarding sales of RVs.......

I am simply lobbying for a change in the rules regarding this.
With all due respect, I personally would not be interested in a forum that would permit the sale of anything within the forum concept. It simply detracts from the purpose of sharing information, exposing potential issues and finding solutions to mutual problems. I don't need a forum to go shopping.
... Eric
With all due respect, informing people that you have X or Y that they may want is sharing information. It may not be the sort of information you are interested in but you don't have to go into that forum the same as I don't go into the Motorhome forums.
One mans noise is another mans signal and frankly the signal to noise ratio on RV net is pretty high on the best of days. Adding a place to post wanted to buy wanted to sell sort of posts wouldn't change that.
I think the Escapee's forum has a valid setup.
Mallo
PS that is only the first time I have mentioned the Escapee's forum.
PPS currently sitting at a 20 percent post deletion rate wondering if this thread will get me to 25 percent.

RE: Forum rules regarding sales of RVs.......

Exactly what is so hard about following the rules of this site? If you don't like them - go elsewhere! jmo.
Nothing hard about it, but then what is so hard about obeying every traffic law. No one does follow every single traffic rule no one follows every single forum rule.
Just don't whine and cry when the Highway patrol pulls you over of the mods delete your post. At least that is my take on it but I'm a rule breaker from way back.

RE: Forum rules regarding sales of RVs.......

This place cracks down on different rules at different times. If the Moderator simply re-states the rule with a single post and chooses not to make it sticky I will assume he/she was directed to do it by Admin and isn't really to serious about it anyways!
Just my take...
I only assume the mod / admin means it on RV.net when my post gets zapped in the bad post zapper. Shoot most of the time I don't even know what arcane ruleiod I've broken just go read the thread and some trigger happy mod's blasted the post out of sight.

RE: Newbie need opinions on 3 brands!! Getting ready to buy!!

My wife and I have been going nuts looking for just the right 5th wheel. I thing we've narrowed to 3 units at 2 price points. I am seeking opinions on the Crossroads Kingston as my higher priced option. Also, in the lower price range, we're considering either a Heartland Sundance or a Keystone Cougar.
From what I've seen, the Sundance seems to offer considerable "bang for the buck". However, I have also heard that dealers have a rough time getting parts from Heartland.
Please provide some feedback on these units and also, if you know of any dealers with aggressive pricing for first time buyers within a few hours of Cincinnati.
Thanks in advance for your comments.
We looked at all three units. The Kingston had very good value, and was the unit we would of went with at that price point. We found that Glacier Bay for a few dollars more was a nicer unit or what we ended up buying was a end of year clearance Hitchhiker.
Back to the topic though.
The Kingston had good floor plan, a fairly good amount of storage (better in fact then some of Crossroads more expensive units). The weight was good, I don't remember if the tank sizes were good or not, just over all it was a good unit for the price point enough better then the other two units you mention to be worth it.

RE: Too good to be true?

That's the wierd part. The internet site lists most of the other campers with MSRP and then the sale price. Seems like they all are 30% off MSRP already. Can they lie about that? The one I am looking at does not list MSRP. I am going there on Tuesday to meet with the sales guy. Nothing on the table yet, but if this looks like an outstanding deal, I want to jump at it.
Thanks for answering. I am starting to think I offended some with this post. Not much response:)
They may simply be clearing it from inventory. We got a very good price on our Hitchhiker in that situation. Check it over carefully make sure it's what you want and if it is congratulations and enjoy your new camper.
